History was made yesterday as Pope Benedict XVI announced his intention of resigning on February 28, 2013. His stated reason is his age, causing declining health and strength, making him unable to properly fulfill the job.

He will be the first pope to resign in almost 600 years. The last was Pope Gregory XII in 1415, whose resignation helped end the Avignon schism, and return a reunited papacy to Rome.
