The Catholic Church has a new leader! Today the house of cardinals elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina to become the new pope. Aged 76, his election was a bit of a surprise to those watching conclave. Bergoglio is the first ever Latin American pope, and has chosen to take the name Francis. He is also the first Jesuit to become pope.

With the Catholic Church facing extremely difficult times, It will be interesting to see what approach Francis will take to the Church’s problems. He is reputably a conservative who has previously spoken out against gay marriage, but some hope he will be a reformer.

We’ll have to wait and see.
